Powell Sterling Smith, aged 88, passed away on September 6, 2025. He was born on May 8, 1937, to Selden and Frances Smith. Powell was the epitome of determination, dedication, and commitment to family.
He graduated from Edinboro High School before earning an engineering degree from Duke University and an MBA from the University of North Carolina. Powell worked for several years in Indonesia before returning to Edinboro. There, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to co-found P&M Auto Parts in Erie with his brother Merrill. Powell ran the store for nearly 60 years before retiring this past spring.
In the 1970s, Powell created a beloved local treasure when he built Mt. Pleasant Ski Resort—now known as Mount Pleasant of Edinboro. He remained actively involved in its success throughout his life, visiting often, keeping up with improvements, and eternally hoping for long winters with abundant snow.
Powell was a devoted husband to Judy, a loving father to Susan and David (Lisa), and a proud grandfather to Leo, Jillian, and Abraham. He is survived by his brother Merrill Smith and sister Carol Thumm as well as several beloved nephews, a niece, great-nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in his death by his sister-in-law Carole Smith, his brother-in-law George Thumm, his wife, and his parents.
In addition to his family, he maintained lifelong relationships with former classmates, loyal employees, and fellow members of the First United Presbyterian Church of Edinboro. Powell loved the town of Edinboro, Duke basketball, and running his businesses.
Powell’s legacy of hard work and deep love for his family will never be forgotten.
A memorial service will be held at the First United Presbyterian Church of Edinboro at a date to be announced.
