Mildred Beck

June 5, 1921 — November 20, 2011

Mildred G. Beck was born in Cleveland, Ohio June 5, 1921 and died at age 90 on November 20, 2011 at home on the farm she loved after struggling with several illnesses and recent hospitalizations.  Mildred graduated from John Adams Senior High School in Cleveland and moved to her Edinboro farm after World War II.  Mil loved and embraced her country life and large family.
Mil was well known for her exceptional generosity to people, animals, and charity groups.  She was always cooking and baking for family, friends, and community groups.  She rarely ate out at a restaurant.  Her old European-style cakes and pastries were well known to family and friends especially at large gatherings at the farm around the holidays.  Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church was a prime recipient of her baking donations, but she also supported many worthy causes that helped others with her own money and time.  Mil was an avid reader and loved to write, especially long letters to family and friends.  While she was formally employed doing quality control for Erie Resistor Corporation (later as Erie Technological Products) her passion was working hard in her farm’s garden (partial to peonies) and orchard and caring for the farm animals which she often treated like pets with names.
Miss Beck was the daughter of John (1962) and Margaret Magdalenda Beck (1978).  She is predeceased by her brothers Joseph (2001) and Robert (2010) and sisters Pearl Beck (late 1920s as a baby), Beverly Fischberg (2002), and June Seither (2008).  Mildred is survived by her brother Louis and many nieces and nephews.
Family will receive visitors in the social hall at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church on Sunday, December 11, 2011 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. with a memorial service in the chapel from 1:00-1:45 p.m. attended by Father Bill Sutherland. Her remains will be handed in a private family service.
Glunt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of arrangements.
Memorial contributions can be directed to the Humane Society of Northwestern Pennsylvania, 2407 Zimmerly Road, Erie, PA  16506 or via HumaneSocietyofNWPA.com.
