Michael J. Mogush, 98 of Edinboro, died Sunday, December 11, 2022 at home. He was born in Littles Corners, Hayfield Township, PA on January 4, 1924, the son of the late George and Eva Mogush.
Mike graduated from Meadville High School in 1942 and worked a short time at Viscose before joining the U.S Army, serving with the 82nd Airborne in the European Theatre during World War II. He later earned an Associate Degree in Accounting from Robert Morris College and worked as an accountant first at Marathon Electric, and then spent 23 years at American Sterilizer.
He was a lifetime member of the Edinboro/McKean VFW Post #740 in Franklin Center, and with his fellow veterans helped build the original building on the current site. He participated in the Veterans Burial Detail, providing military honors at funerals. He was a member of the Edinboro Volunteer Fire Department Fire Police, drove ambulance for the department, and was integral to bingo night fundraisers for years. He was also a member of the Edinboro American Legion, Edinboro Lions Club, Toastmasters International, and the National Association of Accountants.
An avid cook and holiday baker, his walnut bread and sirnitzy were the stuff of legend at family reunions. He loved trying out new recipes he would find in newspapers and magazines, or on the Mr. Food website. You would not go hungry in his presence! He enjoyed his vegetable garden, though it grew smaller over the decades, and he made the best fried green tomatoes and mock mincemeat pie. He tended an always-beautiful flower garden in the front of the house, a showcase on the street. He enjoyed taking his kids to Pirates games in the We Are Family days of the 70s and 80s, and remained a devoted Pirates and Steelers fan. An amiable fellow, he enjoyed playing euchre and other social card games. The back porch was a year-round haven for a small number of TNR stray cats, and he’d make sure they got fed every morning before 7am, usually before getting his own breakfast. The inside cats always found his lap the perfect napping spot and he was happy to oblige. He had a deep baritone voice and would step up to provide Johnny Cash renditions at karaoke evenings. Those who knew Mike will remember his jovial nature and the twinkle in his eye. Outgoing and kindhearted, he was a hard worker, and was always willing to help.
He was preceded in death by his son, Gregory, in 2018; sisters Helen, Mary, Rose, Ann, Evelyn, and brothers John, Charlie, Joe, and Frank.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Barbara; a son, Thomas Mogush of Edinboro; a daughter, Peggy Mogush of Meadville; grandsons, Thomas Mogush Jr and Aaron Mogush, great-granddaughter McKenna, brother-in-law, Daniel Badger of Centerville, PA; and many nieces and nephews.
