Mary Elizabeth Tipton, 89, of Edinboro, died Sunday, March 8, 2015 at St. Vincent Hospital. She was born in Warren, PA on Nov. 23, 1925, the daughter of the late Thomas F. and Helen Williams.
Mary was a foster parent along with her husband, Wayne, for over 27 years. Over the years, they had approximately 250 foster children. She served as an advocate for children on many boards and committees. Mary belonged to local, state and national foster parents associations.
She worked as a waitress and a cook which she loved to do. She enjoyed bingo, sewing, embroidering and making blankets. Mary was a person who enjoyed helping others, such as her volunteer work with hospice, food banks, and other organizations.
For numerous years, she served as judge of elections for Franklin Township.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Wayne Tipton; a son, Billy (Richards) Tipton; a great-grandson, Judah Scrutchins; and three siblings, Roseann Bartlett, Catherine Boardman, and F.T. (Bud) Williams.
Survivors include her four children; Louella Cole of Edinboro, Marjorie Phillips and her husband, Chuck, of Erie, Dennis Tipton and his wife, Carol, of Erie, and Rosemary Gebhardt and her husband, Terry, of Edinboro; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and foster children.
Friends may call at the Glunt Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 210 Erie Street, Edinboro, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A service will be held there on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Andy Kerr officiating.
