Larry W. Hayes, 85, of Edinboro, died Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at his home. He was born on Nov. 13, 1940, the son of the late Walter and Helen Hayes.
Larry graduated from Edinboro High School in 1959. For over 50 years he trained race horses at Commodore Downs, Mountaineer Track and Thistledown, and ended his career at Presque Isle Downs. He also worked as a construction worker for many years and helped build many of the buildings on the Edinboro University campus. He was a partner in the Riverside Inn in Cambridge Springs and worked as a bus driver for the General McLane School District for many years. He enjoyed hunting and pulling his ponies, Mike and Sandy, at county fairs where he had even won 22 blue ribbons in 1 year.
He was a member of Edinboro United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Darla Myers; a sister-in-law, Rita Hayes; and two brothers-in-law, Ralph Myers and John Morris.
Survivors include his loving partner, Susan Miller; two sons, Stephen (Jennifer) Hayes of Edinboro and Leland (Katy Cheeks) Hayes of Erie; a daughter, Connie (Keith) Henderson of Edinboro; a brother, Donald Hayes of Edinboro; two sisters, Audrey Morris of Cranesville and Lorraine (Peter) Dowdell of Fort Pierce, FL; also, four grandchildren, Holly (Scott) Weaver, Cody (Helen) Hayes, Cory (Shannon) Hayes and Jamie Henderson; and six great grandchildren, Colt, Colbie, Connor and Clay Hayes and Bodhi and Zoey Weaver.
The family would like to send a special thank you to Ashley and Rebecca from Interim Hospice and also to Whitney Barron for their support for Larry.
Friends may call at Glunt Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 210 Erie St., Edinboro, on Saturday, March 7, 2026 from 3 to 5 pm. A funeral service will follow at 5 pm.
