George Shimpeno, Jr.

November 18, 1943 — December 15, 2011

George William Shimpeno, Jr., 68, of Edinboro, died Thursday, December 15, 2011 at The Cleveland Clinic. He was born in New Kensington, PA on November 18, 1943. Son of the late George W. Shimpeno, Sr. and Bernice Kipp Shimpeno.
Raised in Harmarville, Pennsylvania, Mr. Shimpeno was a noted soccer player for Springdale High School, The University of Pittsburgh, and the Harmarville Hurricanes. At Pitt, he was voted by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as All-Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey.
After completing bachelors and masters degrees at Pitt, he taught and coached junior high school soccer at Springdale before founding the men's varsity soccer program at Edinboro University, where he retired as an Associate Professor of Physical Education after 34 years. He was also a member of the Association of Tennis Professionals and coached high school tennis at General McLane High School.
More recently, he competed for Team Pittsburgh in the Transplant Games, where he won medals in several sports.
Mr. Shimpeno was an active and well-liked resident of the Lakeside Association in Edinboro and will be greatly missed.
Most importantly, he enjoyed and took pride in the wonderful and fulfilling life he shared with his family and friends. He will always be an inspiration to us all as a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach and teacher.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 45 years, Diana Shimpeno; two sons, George A. Shimpeno and his wife Gemma of Edinboro; and Richard C. Shimpeno and his wife Phoebe of Frisco, CO; one brother, David K. Shimpeno and his wife Tina of Davie, FL; and two grandchildren, Adaline and Harrison Shimpeno of Edinboro.
Friends may call at the Edinboro United Methodist Church, 113 High Street, Edinboro, on Sunday from 2:00 P.M. until the time of the service at 5:00 P.M. With Pastor Lisa Grant officiating.
