Colonel. E.P. Marchese, (retired) age 88, of Edinboro, passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2010 at Select Specialty Hospital in Erie Pa.. He was born on May 5, 1921 to the late Minnie and Thomas Marchese in Harmarville, Pa.
Mel graduated from Oakmont High school and Allegheny Tech. before entering US Air Corps cadet training school in Stillwater, Oklahoma, where he began his 31 year Military career.  In 1944, 1st Lieutenant Mel Marchese married Sgt. Jessie Auld U.S.M.C before being shipped overseas. Mel was a highly decorated pilot, a natural leader, a POW, and a gentleman. His love of the military was lifelong and strong, and his patriotism was without question. For most of his life Mel served his country with honor and valore. After a year piloting with the US Air Corps Mel became Wing commander of the 15th air force, 484 Bomb group, 825 Bomb squad out of North Africa. He flew 35 combat missions over Europe during WWII. He also served in Korea with the 28th division Signal Corps until 1953. After retiring from the service in 1964, Mel worked at Harmarville Coal Mine for 17 years, in conjunction with owning and operating Mel’s Village Tavern, J & M Trucking, and Mel’s Ornamental Iron Works. He retired to Florda where he proudly served as commander of The American Legion Post 110 for 6 years. In 2009 Mel returned To Edinboro to hold the position of chief security officer at Scotland Yards Greenhouse.
In addition to his parents Mel was preceded in death by his loving daughters, Karen Jean Reilly and Kathy Lynne Powell.
Mel leaves behind his loving wife of 66 years Jessie Auld Marchese; a son, John Marchese and his wife Julie of Edinboro, 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Glunt Funeral Home, 210 Erie Street, Edinboro, on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.  A service will be held there on Thursday at 10:00 a.m.
