Dr. John "Jack" Urban

      Dr. John (Jack) David Urban, 86 of Edinboro, PA, died Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at St. Vincent Hospital in Erie, PA. He was born in Greensburg, PA on July 21, 1937, the son of the late John and Louise (Davey) Urban. 

      Jack graduated from Greensburg High School in 1956 where he played football, basketball, and track. He attended Penn State on a football scholarship, graduating in 1960. He was a member of the Football Letterman’s Club and the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He continued his education with master’s degrees from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Rutgers University, and earned his doctoral degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

       Jack returned to Greensburg-Salem High School in 1960 as a math teacher and football coach.  During his summers in Greensburg, Jack was employed by the Greensburg Recreation Board as a youth baseball instructor and as the commissioner of the Greensburg Merchants Softball League. In 1968, he moved to Edinboro, PA to take a teaching position on the faculty of Edinboro State College. Jack was a professor of mathematics and computer science until his retirement in 2000. He taught in the Pennsylvania school system for over four decades and was a professor at Edinboro for over three decades. Jack believed in getting an education and was a dedicated and passionate teacher. He enjoyed fly fishing, camping, golfing, volunteer work and spending time with his family.

      Jack was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lou (Urban) Bick. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Janet (Saxton) Urban; two sons, David (Kimberly) Urban of Downingtown, PA and Christopher (Anahita) Urban of Asheville, NC; a daughter, Jill (James) Pivonka of Camp Hill, PA; a brother, Pat (Diane) Urban of Greensboro, NC; and six grandchildren, April Pivonka, Katie, Sam, & Annie Urban, and Alexander & Azita Urban.
