Betty B. Zalar

December 28, 1925 — April 1, 2026

Erie

Betty B. Zalar, 100, resident of Erie's Asbury Springhill, went to our Lord Wednesday, April 1, 2026. She was born December 28, 1925 in Kenmore, Ohio, but lived most of her life in the town she adored, Barberton, Ohio.

Betty shared a remarkable 49 years of marriage to her husband, Anthony (Tony) Zalar before his passing in 1998. She is survived by her loving daughter; Karen Hoegerl and her husband Tom of Edinboro, PA; a grandson, Michael Hoegerl and his wife Angela of TN; and 3 great grandchildren, Riley, Justin and Kallie.

During WWII, while in high school, Betty worked for the war effort at Seiberling Rubber Co. in Barberton, sealing airplane gas tanks because she was small enough to fit inside them. She went on to be employed at the Goodrich Co. in Akron, eventually becoming an employee of what was then Roadway Express Trucking Co. She was a key puncher, which, with the rise of computers, began data entry. Betty was a super worker and valued by each of her employers.

In retirement, Betty used her amazing work ethic by volunteering at the Red Cross Bloodmobile, the craft fundraiser department of the Village of St. Edward’s Senior Living, and as an usher at the Akron Civic Theater. She also devoted her time to helping her niece, Mary Jane Gardner, in sewing vestments for priests. Betty spent many hours through the years at St. Augustine Catholic Church as part of their Holy Hour Program.

Betty shared her talents of creating beautiful handmade items with family, friends, organizations, and everyone she met. Her memory will live on in the hearts of everyone she touched during her 100 years.

The family extends their love and gratitude to the staff of Asbury Springhill, Forestview, and Interim Healthcare and Hospice.

No services are planned. The Glunt Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Edinboro is entrusted with arrangements.
